The More Jesus Story

In May 2010, two sisters...
Jennifer Stoll and Lara Snowden (Walking With Him), heard their senior pastor, Dave Standfest, deliver a message about Living a Victorious Life. Dave continually reminded the congregation, “Victory comes from living a Spirit-filled life, and if you want more love and joy in your life, then you need more Jesus.” Turning to her sister, Lara said, “That’s it, the answer to everything is ‘more Jesus.'” From that day forth, they made a deliberate effort to respond to life’s many challenges with two simple words: “more Jesus.” Whatever they needed, they knew “more Jesus” was the answer! This simple message was exceedingly powerful, and it grew in their hearts. Excited to share with their pastor how meaningful his message had been, Lara pulled Dave aside after Saturday morning prayer time at their church. She told him what his words had meant and suggested they make a bumper sticker to inspire others to live out a life filled with more Jesus. Several months later, they produced “More Jesus” bumper stickers.

Requests came, interest grew and the local Christian radio station, WLJN, decided to get involved. On February 14, 2011, the Lord put a song in Jennifer’s heart. Unable to read music or even carry a tune (she has no musical background whatsoever!) In the days that followed, Jennifer felt she was to share this divinely inspired gift – complete with lyrics and melody – with Brian Whitscell, a worship leader at her church. Deeply moved, Brian was honored that God was allowing him to be part of this message. Two weeks later, he devoted an entire day to be alone with God. Desiring only what God wanted, he prayed, “Lord, let me be part of making incredible music that will bless the world.” By the end of that day, God gave him the song “More Jesus”. Released in June 2011, it played on over 200 Inspirational stations across the country. Rising to number #13 on Billboard and #8 on Christian Music Weekly charts. “More Jesus” finished the year #42 of the Top 75 Christian songs and the highest ranking song from an independent artist in 2011.

God continues to inspire Jennifer and Brian with more songs that build on the the message of “More Jesus”.

“Practicing Your Presence Now” was released in February 2012 and “Like You” the summer of 2012. May each of these songs help us live in the Lord’s presence and equip us to be more like Him!

Want to hear the whole story? Check out the Faith Walk televisoin program which featured a conversation with Jennifer Stoll, Lara Snowden, Brian Whitscell, Wendell Gafford (Creative Promotions) and WLJN’s DC Cavender. The program, broadcast in the Traverse City, MI, region, is hosted by DC’s wife, Jane Cavender. Jane leads a wonderful discussion about how God first brought the idea of “More Jesus” to Jennifer and Lara and how He connected them with Brian Whitscell that led to the recording and release of this powerful song. DC and Wendell had the chance to share how they first connected with “More Jesus” and how God continues to impact thousand if not millions through this song and ministry.

Brian Whitscell’s life and music reflect his love for the Lord and gratefulness for His gift of salvation. By God’s grace and purpose, Brian has dedicated his life to serving the Lord and using his musical gifts to lead others into God’s presence through praise and worship. Brian is a worship leader, vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, husband and father. His heart’s desire is to see people come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and for them to experience the life-changing power of the Cross.

Beginning at the age of 5, Brian spent hours singing along with his favorite music while his mom, an accomplished pianist and music teacher, patiently listened and encouraged him. When he was 12, he persuaded his mom and dad to let him trade in his first instrument, a trombone, for an electric guitar.

Throughout his teens, Brian poured all his energy into his music, pursuing what the world defined as success. After several years of traveling and playing with a rock group, he emerged directionless and lost. The music and the life it brought ultimately left him empty and without hope. By God’s grace, his wife Teresa came into his life and Brian gave up his pursuit of a music career, but God had not given up on Brian.

During the years that followed, God took Brian through a ‘musical famine’. “I was searching deep within for something I knew was missing but I didn’t know what it was. I grew up in church where I learned about God, but I never truly knew the Lord in a personal way. God brought many different people into my life to point me to Himself.”

After an invite from a friend, Brian and Teresa began attending a new church where they both gave their lives completely to Jesus Christ. Changes began in their hearts immediately. Their desires became less about themselves and more about seeking God’s desire for their lives and marriage. “Finally, we surrendered everything to God and He began working miracles in our hearts and lives. He turned us right-side up.”

Then, Brian felt the call. “Now I clearly see how God had been patiently calling me all along. Like the prodigal son who finally turns back to his father, God was waiting to welcome me back. He showed me how the music He placed in my heart was always meant for Him alone. It was never meant to make a name for me, but to make His name known.” Shortly after surrendering his life to Him, the Lord spoke to Brian’s heart. “I knew God was saying that I needed to pick up music again and give it entirely to Him. I made a commitment to the Lord right then. I told Him that every note I sing, play and write would be only for His glory and purpose. I prayed that He would use me and the music He would give to lead others to a saving knowledge of Him.”

God began opening doors for Brian to lead worship at his home church as well as at other area churches. Next, He took Brian to the worship concert stage and then to the festival stage he had played years before in a secular band. This time, Brian was there for a completely different reason. God was showing how He is able to completely transform a life. At these events, Brian and a team of worshiping musicians from several area churches loudly proclaimed the joy of Salvation that comes only through Jesus Christ.

Brian is a worship pastor at New Hope Community Church in Traverse City, MI. He has recently co-written and recorded the song More Jesus that is getting radio airplay both nationally and internationally. The song and ministry surrounding it is being used to turn hearts back to the Lord by proclaiming the simple yet profound truth that what we need most in our lives is more Jesus. “I continue to be amazed at how God chooses to use me. I never want to take one single moment He’s given me for granted. My prayer is to be used by God and led by the Holy Spirit to bring people to a saving knowledge of our Savior, Jesus Christ. I have first hand experience of the life transformation He does within us as we surrender completely to Him. My heart’s cry is to see others changed in the way Jesus changed me!”

Brian and his wife Teresa celebrate 27 years of marriage this year. The greatest blessings of their lives are their two young daughters, Sarah and Mandy. Brian’s continued prayer is “to be part of music and ministry that touches the world for Christ.”

We confess that we have asked for ‘More’, more stuff, more money, more food, more things, more sex, more luxury, more comfort, more pleasure, more fame, more easy-solutions, more ease and more recognition.

We have wanted to be Christian celebrities; we have made idols of ourselves and our programs; we have wanted to be Christian men and women of ease.

We have grown blind, fat and lazy in the last days.

By our desires we have received ‘more’, more troubles, more addictions, more crime, more prisons, more fears, more abortions, more lust, more sin, more selfish indulgence, more excess, more laziness, more greed, more fatherless kids, more apostasy and more rebellion.

Today in this dark hour…we simply ask for ‘More Jesus’.

We proclaim that we want to seek they Kingdom come, ‘First’ and then wait for you to add whatever blessings you choose.

May we become humble slaves of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Take over this day of prayer.

Your children are praying.

What We Believe

2 Timothy 3:15-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21

We believe the Holy Scriptures are God's Word, divinely inspired, infallible, the supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.

John 10:30; John 14:26; Philippians 2:5-7

We believe in one God, eternally existent in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

John 1:1-4; Mathew 1:23; Philippians 2:5-11; Hebrews 1:1-4 & 4:15; Acts 1:11 & 2:22-24; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, His full divinity, His virgin birth, His sinless humanity, His atoning death, His bodily resurrection, His ascension, His present mediatorial work at the right hand of God and His personal imminent return in power and glory.

Galatians 5:16-18; Romans 8:9; Matthew 3:11; Acts 2:4

We believe in the Holy Spirit who regenerates, indwells and empowers the believers to develop the character of Christ and live every day in God's will and bear fruit for God.

Ephesians 2:8-9; Romans 5:1

We believe there is salvation for sinners through the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ by grace through faith, apart from works.

Ephesians 1:22-23; 1 Corinthians 12:12,27

We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ and that all true believers are members of His body, the Church.

Romans 10:9-15; Acts 1:8; Matthew 28:18-20; 1 Peter 3:15

We believe that the ministry of evangelism is a responsibility of both the church and each Christian being commissioned by Christ to go into the world and make disciples of all nations.

Revelations 20:11-15; 1 Corinthians 15:51-57

We believe there will be a resurrection and a final judgment; the lost will be eternally condemned and the saved will enter into their inheritance in the new heavens and the new earth.
